Long Lace Skirt

Long Lace Skirt
skirt - Forever 21+ / boots - MooShoes.com / leggings - Target / t-shirt - Target / cardigan - Target / arrow necklace - ModCloth.com (old) / moon necklace - Etsy.com

We have these days at work where we're "supposed" to wear a certain color or a certain t-shirt. I know that most staff members love it, because it takes the guesswork out of what to wear each day. I know I'm in the minority here, but I actually like getting dressed each day, and it sometimes bums me out to have to wear the shirt/color of the day.

I actually truly forgot to wear the t-shirt I was supposed to be wearing on this day. I was walking into work and I was like "oh crap, I forgot to wear the shirt-of-the-day" but it was too late to turn around or to change, so oh well. Of course, I got harassed about it later. Argh. Whatever. I wear what I want.

Long Lace Skirt

I bought this skirt last spring from Forever 21+ and of course it was too long. I "hemmed" it really badly because it's a really see-through wide-weave lace fabric that doesn't hem well. I tucked my t-shirt in, but maybe next time I'll wear it over? The elastic waistband isn't really fancy or anything. The miniskirt part is attached, but it's pretty see-through, too, so I wear leggings underneath. Also because I wear leggings under pretty much everything.

Long Lace Skirt

I put on my crescent moon necklace (first seen here) and decided that my accessories needed a little something more, so I dug around in my jewelry box and found this ModCloth necklace I was gifted for Christmas several years ago (similar necklace via Etsy here). It's silver like the moon necklace, so I think that they paired well.

Long Lace Skirt

Combat boots + dresses will probably always be one of my favorite combinations, forever.

Black Flowers

Black Flowers
shoes - Aldo via DSWarehouse / leggings - Target / dress - Target (old) / cardigan - Target / glasses - Coastal.com

I've been wearing all black for so long lately, it almost felt weird to wear this dress with flowers today. But it was the start of a brand new set of classes at work, so maybe I looked more friendly this day.

This giant sweater cardigan was one of my latest Target scores, from the plus-size department. I've been wanting a big, drapey cardigan for a while now... something that I could just kind of blanket myself in and hide if needed. I feel like that most days now, actually.

Black Flowers

This dress is quite old... in fact, you can view it here in a very old 2011 post! I'm now at an age where I'm old enough to own clothing from years ago that feel like I only bought recently. In fact, the last time I wore this dress, I wasn't even pregnant yet! Eek!

It feels good to finally be back in some of my "pre-baby" clothes. I don't want to go buy all new clothes, I really just want to fit back into the old ones!

Black Flowers

The dress was originally part of the Tucker collection for Target.

Black Flowers

Black Flowers

I get complements from 7th and 8th grade girls every time I wear these shoes. So that's how you know that they MUST be cool...!

Black Flowers

My favorite glasses ever - Derek Cardigan via Coastal.com. For someone who usually wears contacts, I own four different pairs of prescription glasses. And this pair is the best of them all.

Santa's Little Helper - Salted Whiskey Caramels

 photo titleforsure_zps768e2c1c.jpg
Ok, let's face it...While they can also be a ton of fun, the holidays are a somewhat stressful time of year. Sure you get to chow down on some delicious food &(in some instances) get presents...but seriously! We don't all have story-book perfectly cooked turkey Thanksgivings & what-have yous in our near future. So, with that in mind, I would like to introduce you to a little recipe that is sure to keep you jolly through the years and this holiday season.

SALTED WHISKEY CARAMELS!
Ingredients:
  • 5 tbsp. butter
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 2 oz. (1/4 cup) whiskey
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1/4 tsp. kosher (coarse) salt (plus some to sprinkle)
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/4 cup light corn syrup

Hardware:
  • 9-inch cookie sheet
  • Parchment or wax paper
  • Cooking spray
 photo Youwillneed_zps8f12e449.jpg
Step 1:
Line 9-inch square pan with parchment or wax paper, allowing the paper to drape over two sides; spray lightly with cooking spray.

Step 2:
In 1-quart saucepan, heat butter, heavy whipping cream, whiskey, vanilla, and 1/4 teaspoon salt to boiling, stirring frequently. Remove from heat; set aside.
 photo Step1_zps9cf792ff.jpg Step 3
In 3-quart saucepan, mix sugar, corn syrup, and water. Heat to boiling over medium-high heat.
DO NOT STIR (it's hard to resist!!!)
Boil until sugar turns a warm golden brown.
 photo Step2_zps5aeb8725.jpg
Step 4
When the sugar mixture is done, turn off the heat and slowly add the cream mixture to the sugar mixture. Be careful -- it will bubble up violently. Cook over medium-low heat for about 10 minutes, until the mixture reaches 248 degrees F (firm ball) on a candy thermometer. photo Step3_zps33c6f973.jpg
Step 5
Pour caramel into pan & cool for 10 minutes. Then, sprinkle with up to 1 tablespoon salt. Let it cool completely before step 6.
 photo Pourtocool_zps18f24bcf.jpg
Step 6
Cut into squares & PIG OUT!!!!
 photo Addsaltandcut_zps6d809bae.jpg
Some of mine turned out a little softer than desired, so I used it as an ice-cream topping...JUST as delicious. Of course, if you're not a greedy Grinch like me, you can wrap them in parchment paper or gift bags and give them as gifts....Of course, you may want to try a few batches to work out any kinks before you go crazy! Oh! and...Thanks, Betty Crocker...for making our holidays much more manageable.

Until next time!

Bento Report, V.4

The Bento Report is a regular feature on the blog where I show you what's in my lunch for a few select days over the past couple of weeks. It's informational because I am a post weight-loss surgery patient who is also a vegetarian/pescetarian, but also fun because I love the idea of bento lunches and have fun making my lunch look cute and/or making it fit into unique lunchbox container constraints.

You can view past posts of my Bento Report series here.
  Bento Report V.4

  1. Faux lunchmeat mini sandwiches cut out using these cute cutter shapes.
  2. Primal Strip!
  3. Almonds
  4. Cheese and grapes skewers
  5. Mini Tupperware o'vitamins

Bento Report V.4

I recently starting using my cute little ninja girl bento box for smaller, quick lunches. It's a two-section box, with a third "section" that's an upside-down bowl. Here's how she packs up:

Ballet Skirts and Leather Jackets

Ballet skirts and Leather coats
shoes - DSWarehouse / tights - We Love Colors / skirt - eShakti / t-shirt - Iron Maiden tee (turned backwards) / jacket - Target (old) / earrings - Etsy

Ugh, I've got a mad case of the CBE's here: Crazy Big Eyes. Please excuse.

So I was pretty excited to discover that this (faux) leather jacket from Target several years ago (like pre-pregnancy) finally fits again! So I had to wear it today with something. This is how I discovered that I do not have a wardrobe staple: a solid black t-shirt.

Ballet skirts and Leather coats

Being the resourceful and "refuses-to-take-no-for-an-answer" type of girl that I am, I simply wore another t-shirt (my Iron Maiden t-shirt, seen here) and turned it backwards. Hey, no one sees the design since I have the jacket on anyways... so why not?

Ballet skirts and Leather coats

I can't seem to bring myself to stop wearing all/mostly black right now. The color just feels like a safe hiding place to me right now, and I want to keep hiding in it all winter. I have a lot of stress and "things" going on right now, between the things that I want to do (spend time with family, roller derby) and the things that are necessary evils (grad school, teacher's union, my day-to-day-job) that I really don't want to do, but suck up a huge chunk of my life and mostly make me unhappy overall. There are good parts to those things, but overall, I'd rather not have them. Just feeling down about it lately.

Therefore, black.

Ballet skirts and Leather coats

I love this jacket. I wish the sleeves weren't so long, though. #shortgirlproblems

An Evening with the Legendary Shack Shakers & Aaron Lee Tasjan

photo 10394635_904502829560869_7444219490056171088_n_zps04e5998e.jpgLegendary Shack Shakers kicked off their new US tour Wednesday night at the Double Door and they KILLED it! Not only was the music incredible, but the energy and vitality of the band was nothing short of sensational. J.D. Wilkes is a force to be reckoned with as both a front man and a blues harpist. So grotesquely & vivaciously appealing that you simply cannot divert your attention elsewhere. Rod Hamdallah shreds swampy like no other and Mark Robertson delivers molten steady low-down & dirty bass lines on the upright. Brett Whitacre provides the steadfast rhythmic drum backbone with ferocious & undulant precision…(He’s also one KICK ASS artist AND my buddy!).
photo 1513724_904927472851738_7291621110819739971_n_zps74af6b35.jpg If you are not familiar with the Legendary Shack Shakers’ music, it’s a sultry swampy mixture of Southern Gothic punk rock and twang. The band originated in the south and that fact is inherently apparent in their music. From the first note, you are mentally transported to a spooky dingy dive bar in the heart of the South. On a side note, you may also know their music from the tv show True Blood (Swampblood…It’s on the Soundtrack…I checked!), and / or the “Sunglasses” GEICO commercial…amongst other musical cameos.
photo 861035_684701934902872_54314188_o_zps12ece8b0.jpg If you are an avid show-goer, you may have seen them touring with Reverend Horton Heat, Robert Plant, Rancid, The Black Keys, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, and Hank Williams III. They are currently touring with a young man from my home state of Ohio (yes…I’m from OHIO) Aaron Lee Tasjan. I was so impressed with this guy I bought two of his handmade albums. At first glance he is seemingly innocuous, a singer-songwriter and an acoustic guitar. Don’t be fooled…under that giant trucker hat and long hair lies a real live troubadour. I love him. His music is thought provoking and lyrically poignant-- a witty, but brutally honest songwriter with chops. I’m also pretty sure he’s the love child of Paul Simon and Shooter Jennings.
This dynamic duo of awesomeness will be out and about the Midwest over the next few weeks so, CHECK THEIR TOUR DATES and make it a point to go see some REAL music! ;) (P.S. All of these photos are front he artists' Facebook pages. Legendary Shack Shakers & Aaron Lee Tasjan)

Chunky Scarves

Chunky Scarf
leggings - Target / boots - Target (last year) / tunic - Target / scarf - Target / earrings - Etsy

As I'm typing this post, I realize how Target-riffic this post is. Unintentional, I assure you, but it does attest to how much I spend on clothing at Target. Especially basic pieces, like leggings.

This long tunic shirt was a nice surprise find one day when I made a quick trip with my mom to the store. I wasn't looking for a new shirt, but that's usually when you find one. Then when you really DO need one, no luck, right?

Chunky Scarf

As I had mentioned in my winter accessory wishlist, I really wanted a chunky black infinity scarf for this winter. I had been browsing Etsy, and found a few to add to my favorites (one, two), but when I came across this inexpensive option at (where else?) Target, I knew my search was over.

Chunky Scarf

I wore these boots on this red and black OOTD post, and they've proven to be pretty comfortable and a good solution for long days at work. And of course, my favorite new staple earrings! I wear them ALL THE TIME. I was initially worried that they'd fall out, not having a backing or anything, but so far so good!

Chunky Scarf

My scarf isn't as chunky as I had originally imagined I wanted one to be, but for the price, it's sufficient. Maybe in the future I can invest in one of those other beauties.

Monday Love, V.6

Monday Love

What I'm loving lately...

Monday Love

Halloween stuff at 50% off or more! I found these cups at Walgreens. I have a Hello Kitty and a Betsey Johnson cup like this, too. When Iggy broke the top of my Hello Kitty cup, I purchased a different cup from Michaels (yep, the craft store, who knew?) for like a dollar and just kept the parts that needed to be replaced. These cheapy plastic straw cups are my favorite, and the perfect size for toting home-made cold-brew in the mornings from home.

Speaking of cold brew...

Monday Love

These coffees from Dark Matter are so good. Lisa took me to Osmium Coffee Bar on one of our city adventures one day, and I picked up some Unicorn Blood to put in the Toddy for cold brew. Todd's comment was "it's probably the greatest cold brew that I've ever had." Then, when we arrived at The Vic theater early for King Diamond a few weeks ago, I realized that Osmium was literally right around the corner. We walked over and I not only picked up some more Unicorn Blood, but some Mastodon Black Blood, too! Basically, the most metal coffee ever.

Monday Love

I got a new tiny bento box and it's HELLO KITTY! This is seriously adorable. It's probably useful as a snack box for most people - big enough for pretzels and hummus or cheese and crackers. But I've been feeling not-so-awesome lately and haven't been able to eat as much, so this size is actually perfect if I plan the contents thoughtfully.

Monday Love
Monday Love

These are my new favorite earrings. They look like staples! I bought them on Etsy.

 photo ragindaisy3_zps4awuo0mk.jpg

What inspires you when you’re feeling down? How do you stay positive during hard times?

SEX AND THE CITY NEVER LETS YOU DOWN WHEN YOU NEED YOUR SPIRITS LIFTED. OH AND ......ROCKIN TO THE RAMONES IS LIKE A GOOD DOSE OF B12.

What is your best advice for people who want to start their own business?

DO WHAT YOU LOVE, SURROUND YOURSELF WITH THOSE WHO CELEBRATE YOU, DON'T LISTEN TO THE NAY SAYERS, AND STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF AND WHAT YOU BELIEVE.....

What are you the most proud of?

WE ARE MOST PROUD OF HOW FAR WE HAVE COME AND THAT WE'VE OVERCOME SO MANY OBSTACLES. WE STARTED OFF IN A TINY SPACE THAT WAS $200 A MONTH IN 1993 AND HAD NO CLUE WHAT WE WERE DOING. WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO OPEN NEXT DOOR TO A PUNK ROCK CLUB AND THIS ALLOWED US THE OPPORTUNITY TO MEET ALOT OF MUSICIANS AND THAT IS WHAT SET THE TONE FOR OUR STORE..... THE 90'S WERE A GREAT TIME TO START OFF. FASHION WAS FUN AND CRAZY. YOU HAD YOUR PUNK ROCKERS,GOTHS, ROCK-A-BILLY KIDS, SWING DANCERS, RAVERS AND GRUNGE ROCKERS. WE WOULD NOT TRADE THOSE DAYS FOR ANYTHING.

 photo ragindaisy4_zpslf7xnv7s.jpg

What are you most proud of?

WE ARE VERY PROUD IN THE FACT THAT SOME OF OUR VERY FIRST CUSTOMERS ARE STILL OUR CUSTOMERS TODAY AND WE CONSIDER THEM ALL DEAR FRIENDS.

Do you have any big upcoming plans for your shop?

TAKING OVER THE WORLD ONE RHINESTONE AT A TIME.

I can’t wait!!! Can we buy your stuff online?

ONLINE STORE IS IN THE NEAR FUTURE. IT'S TIME TO GET RID OF THE FLIP TOPS AND WEB T.V. AND CATCH UP WITH THE 21ST CENTURY...HEHE

Urban Watercolor Sketching

Urban Watercolor Sketching

I was recently sent a copy of Urban Watercolor Sketching: A Guide to Drawing, Painting, and Storytelling in Color by Felix Scheinberger for review. As an artist/art teacher, the topic really drew me in. I haven't painted with watercolor very often, but I love the idea of it, and it's so much easier to pull out and paint with a pan of watercolors than with acrylics... so I should really start doing it more.

Urban Watercolor Sketching

I love the illustrations in this book that go along with the text. This particular page, reminiscent of a "what's in my bag" blog post theme, is beautiful to look at and to read.

Urban Watercolor Sketching

Just flipping through the pages gives me inspiration and makes me want to pull out some paint and paper!

Urban Watercolor Sketching

For all you freezing weather plein air painters, the solution to watercolor painting has been solved - just use alcohol! Not sure I'll be heading outdoors in the winter soon, but it's good to know that I have a strategy if the feeling hits me.

Urban Watercolor Sketching

As an artist, I can often suffer from creative "block" that keeps me from making art, but this book helps break through the barriers and inspire me to get painting!

*** I received this book from Blogging for Books for this review. ***
